# API key

An **API key** is a technical access key that allows a device or application to authenticate itself with BoreDoc.

An API key is used so that existing access to a account can be utilised without the need for manual re-authentication each time it is used.

The actions that can be performed with an API key depend on the associated access and the permissions granted for that purpose.

For security and organisational reasons, each API key should only be used for a specific purpose and should not be shared indiscriminately.
