# Explanation: borehole profile

A borehole profile is a to-scale graphical representation of the subsurface along a borehole. It shows the structure of the soil layers and the technical lining of the borehole at their actual depths, making the subsurface conditions visually comprehensible.

Typically, a borehole profile contains:

- Elevation and depth references, usually relative to a reference system such as NHN, as well as the starting point of the borehole
- the geological sequence of strata, including soil types (e.g. humus, gravel or clay) and their properties, such as bulk density or moisture content
- stratum thicknesses and depth data, which illustrate the exact course of the individual strata
- Measurement and observation points, e.g. groundwater levels or sampling points with time stamps
- Technical lining of the borehole, such as casing, solid-wall and filter pipes, sump pipes, and materials used, such as filter gravel
- Capping and lining components, e.g. wellheads or covers
- Scale information enabling the correct interpretation of the diagram

The borehole profile serves as the key document for assessing subsurface conditions and borehole lining. It forms an important basis for the planning, construction and operation of wells and geothermal installations.
