# Explanation: stratigraphic index

A **stratigraphic index** is a tabular document providing a detailed description of the soil and rock strata encountered during drilling. It serves to record the geological conditions along the depth of the borehole in a structured manner.

Typically, a stratigraphic index contains:

- Depth data defining the location of the individual layers
- Designations of soil and rock types, with geological classification (stratigraphy) where applicable
- Description of material properties, e.g. consistency, bulk density or moisture content
- Additional characteristics, such as colour or lime content
- Details of drilling progress through each layer
- Information on samples taken and analyses carried out
- Comments on special features or anomalies

The stratigraphic index forms the basis for the geological assessment of the subsoil and supplements graphical representations such as borehole profiles or geological cross-sections.
