# Explanation: Field test: dynamic penetration test

A **conical penetration test** is a geotechnical field test used to assess the compaction and bearing capacity of the subsoil. In this test, a probe is driven into the ground by repeated blows, with the penetration resistance being used as a measure of the soil’s properties.

Typically, the following details are documented during a dynamic cone penetration test:

- the location of the test point and the type of probe used
- the number of blows per penetration distance or per depth section
- the depth reached and any termination criteria
- Any anomalies in the penetration behaviour, e.g. very loose or very dense layers
- Details of changes in soil type or obstacles in the subsoil
- Conditions under which the test was carried out and the equipment used

The dynamic cone penetration test enables a rapid preliminary assessment of subsoil conditions and is frequently used to prepare for or supplement further geotechnical investigations.
