# Information required for a stratigraphic index

The **stratigraphic index** is generated from the geological data of a single borehole. To ensure that a meaningful stratigraphic index can be created, the layers must be structured along the borehole depth and recorded as completely as possible.

In the stratigraphic index, you should in particular maintain:

- the depth intervals of the individual layers
- the soil or rock types for each layer
- material properties such as consistency, bulk density or moisture content
- additional characteristics such as colour, lime content or other geological indications
- where applicable, supplementary information on samples, anomalies or special features

The quality of the stratigraphic record depends heavily on whether the layers are recorded in a **structured** format rather than simply as free text. Structured layer data also form an important basis for further documents and analyses in BoreDoc.

The data from stratigraphic index is used in particular for:

- **Drilling profiles** for the graphical representation of the subsurface
- **Geological cross-sections** to link multiple boreholes
- **Calculations in accordance with VDI 4640**, provided that thermal extraction rates per layer are maintained
- Further geological analyses requiring a traceable sequence of layers

Notes on data maintenance:

- Record the layers in their actual sequence along the borehole depth.
- Ensure that the depth intervals are complete and consistent.
- Use structured data entries where available.
- Free text may be useful as a supplement, but does not replace a structured layer description.
- For geothermal boreholes, also check whether the specific heat extraction rate should be maintained for each layer.
