# Information required for a geological cross-section

The data for the **geological section** is derived from the **boreholes at a drilling site** and their **stratigraphic indices**.

The data is entered in the borehole master data under **Location / Coordinates** and in the **stratigraphic index** field for the respective borehole.

To produce a meaningful geological cross-section, both the spatial location and the geological strata must be consistently maintained for several boreholes.

The data is maintained as follows:

- **Borehole coordinates**: Each borehole requires valid geographical coordinates. These are used to determine the spatial arrangement within the section.
- **Elevation data**: Correct elevation values must be recorded for all boreholes. It is important that all data is provided in the same elevation reference system, e.g. NHN, as no automatic conversion takes place between different systems.
- **stratigraphic index**: The geological strata are defined by depth intervals for each borehole and form the basis for the stratigraphic sequence in the section.
- **Automatic section line**: The position of the section line is determined automatically. The shortest connection between the boreholes furthest apart is used for this.
- **Automatic layer assignment**: The connection and display of strata between boreholes is carried out automatically on the basis of the structured stratigraphic description. Free-text entries are not taken into account in this process.

The geological cross-section schematically represents the subsurface distribution between several boreholes and combines their geological information into a single view.

Maintenance guidelines:

- Use the same elevation reference system for all boreholes involved.
- Check that the coordinates of all boreholes are plausible and complete.
- Record the strata in a structured manner so that they can be automatically connected in the section.
- Please note that free-text entries in stratigraphic index are not sufficient for automatic layer assignment.
